Hong Kong still No. 1

Despite being under direct control of the mainland since 1997, Hong Kong has managed to maintain its status as a free market economy and once again was ranked the world’s freest economy by The Heritage Foundation and Wall Street Journal:

Hong Kong was ranked the world’s freest economy for the 12th consecutive year by the Heritage Foundation and The Wall Street Journal, which cited the city’s free port, the free entry of foreign capital and the rule of law.

The city’s score is at its highest in the 12 years that the “Index of Economic Freedom” has been published, Danny Gittings, deputy editorial page editor of The Wall Street Journal Asia, said Wednesday in Hong Kong.
