…as the world’s largest cargo port.
According to the Shanghai Port Admin Bureau, Shanghai is now the world’s largest cargo port after handling 443 million tons during 2005. Singapore handled roughly 422 million tons during the same time period.
Shanghai remains the world’s third largest container port behind Hong Kong and Singapore.
Shanghai, China’s commercial capital, has surpassed Singapore as the world’s top cargo port in terms of throughput, a result of the country’s fast-expanding trade in goods, according to official figures.
Total cargo throughput rose 16.9 percent to 443 million tonnes in 2005, some 21 million tonnes more than Singapore, the Shanghai Port Administration Bureau said on its website.
In 2005, exports accounted for 84 million tonnes, a rise of 24.5 percent, while imports totalled 101 million tons, up 11.1 percent. The combined foreign trade total of 185 million tonnes was up 16.8 percent over 2004, it said.
In terms of value, exports for the year climbed 28.4 percent to 762 billion dollars, while imports rose a slower 17.6 percent to 660.12 billion dollars. source – AFP
