Hapag Lloyd - CP Ships Job Cuts

By Splatty • Apr 20th, 2006 • Category: Seafreight

It appears that job cuts are coming at Hapag Lloyd after their recent acquisition of CP Ships. The company plans to layoff 44 percent of its workforce due to overlap in staffing and job functions. Bloomberg.com reports that:

The company will fire 2,000 of its 4,500 employees to eliminate staff overlaps, Hamburg-based Hapag-Lloyd said today in a statement. The reductions will be made at about 200 centers, with more than 200 jobs being cut in Tampa, Florida, the company’s former North American hub, and 500 at CP Ships’ former headquarters at Gatwick, England.

This really isn’t a huge surprise and seems to be the norm when two companies with similar service offerings merge. With all of the consolidation in the industry, both on the logistics side and shipping side, this is a trend that will continue for some time.
