Suez vs Panama Canal

I simultaneously love and hate the Journal of Commerce. Love ‘em because they have weekly issues with excellent articles covering everything from ocean and airfreight to supply chain strategy and technology. Hate ‘em because the only way to access their articles online is if you are already a subscriber and have registered online. Yes, you can read the articles via a very cool online viewing platform, but it is impossible to grab and quote text for ease of blogging. Every week I come across numerous articles that I would love to post on and link to, but can not because of the way their website is set up. But I digress……
Anyways, for those of you who can get their hands on a copy of this week’s Journal of Commerce magazine, there is an excellent front page report on the growing popularity of the Suez Canal vs Panama for All Water East Coast service from Asia. As explained above, I can not link to the article, but it is a great read if you get the magazine. Basically, with the rise in number of super large post-Panamax vessels (+8000 TEUs), which is only expected to increase, the cost and time differentials between Panama and Suez continue to narrow. Due to port congestion and intermodal problems with landbridge services from the West Coast, all water service is becoming ever more popular, and the Suez canal is becoming an attractive alternative to the Panama Canal. Several container lines have started all water service through the Suez bound for the east coast and are expected to increase the number of sailings through the Suez, including from China.
Again, this is in the June 19, 2006 issue of the Journal of Commerce magazine, hope you can find a copy to read.
