Ouch again!
This is a bit old, but Boeing’s vice president of marketing has a blog and back in April he let loose with both barrels regarding the weight difference between Airbus’ A380 freighter and Boeing’s 747-8:
I mean, why would you want to buy an airplane that hauls 74 tonnes more weight on every trip, just so you can have the capability to carry 7 tonnes more revenue payload? That’s right, every time an A380F takes off, it will be carrying 74 tonnes of extra weight. If you ask me, that’s the definition of a very inefficient freighter.
—————————————————————–
Bottom line: with the A380F, you’re flying around over 40% more airplane structural weight for only 5% more revenue payload! That’s not a good trade-off. And it’s why Boeing believes the 747-8F will consume about 30% less fuel per trip and well over 20% less fuel per tonne.
This has nothing to do with “Boeing PR.” And has everything to do with simple math.
His post includes an easy to understand table and math to illustrate his point. Hat tip to Planetnation who linked to Boeing’s blog.
I think it’s a smart idea for Boeing to develop their own blog to further their marketing and communication as well as advance their ideas and opinions to the world. More and more companies are finding the blogosphere as a valuable outlet for communicating to the public in an open forum. GM recently put their blog to good used in slamming the New York Times’ recent column that denigrated the company with particular viciousness. The story on GM’s response via their blog was picked up by prominent bloggers such as Instapundit and Mickey Kaus, giving their story far more publicity and readership than they could have hoped via traditional methods.
It will be interesting to see what the reaction will be as more major corporations join the blogosphere. Hmmm…..not really an Army of Davids experience, more of an Army of Goliaths using David’s sling and ammo to attack other Goliaths.
