Are We Safer Now?

The Journal of Commerce has an excellent front page article in this week’s 9/11 issue that looks at their own readers’ assessments on transportation security. As usual, you can only access the article if you are a subscriber, but some of the findings and commentary from their readers is very interesting.

For example, 85% of those polled feel their supply chain is more secure than compared to 5 years ago while only 55% feel the government has done a good job with security. Of the security improvements the government should make, image scanning and radiation detection at foreign ports was the number one choice of those polled. Roughly two thirds of those C-TPAT members polled said they had fewer inspections or cargo was released faster.

There is also some interesting commentary regarding C-TPAT, Port Security, and legislation. I particularly enjoyed the tale of the congressman who was thinking of proposing a system to have U.S. citizens with security clearances be placed as security inspectors at every factory overseas that exported to the U.S. – and thinking this could be accomplished with a “couple of hundred” inspectors.
