Industry opposes California “Container Tax”

Via Maritime Global Net:

Opponents of the bill, which would impose a container fee of US$30 per TEU,
want the governor to veto it

The Retail Industry Leaders Association (RILA) has opposed the
legislation as “not being sufficiently explicit regarding the collection and
disbursement of fees”.

RILA President Sandy Kennedy wrote in a letter to Mr Schwarzenegger
that “additional cargo fees will burden companies that already pay billions in
maritime related costs, will make California less attractive for shippers and
may violate the US commerce clause”.

The Journal of Commerce also has a lengthier article on the same subject in this week’s issue.
