Imports into the U.S. hit record highs during the month of July for seven U.S. ports. The largest ports in the U.S., Long Beach and Los Angeles, surged ahead 10% over last year’s pace.
Nowhere is the surge more evident than in Los Angeles, the nation’s largest port, where overall cargo traffic is running more than 10% ahead of last year’s record pace. At Long Beach, the No. 2 U.S. port, container traffic is up nearly 9% from year-earlier levels. July imports reached 404,665 containers in Los Angeles and 305,117 in Long Beach, the report said. source - LA Times
Global Insight Inc. which tracks activity at major U.S. ports, reported that the ports of Los Angeles, Long Beach, Oakland, Tacoma, Seattle on the West Coast and New York/New Jersey, Hampton Roads, Virginia, Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, Ga., on the East Coast handled 1.38 million TEU’s during the month.
The good news is that despite the record numbers of containers transiting the ports, all of the ports covered by Port Tracker are currently rated “low” for congestion.
