Fuel Surcharges On The Way Down?

It’s been quite sometime since I have read or heard about a company decreasing any type of fuel surcharge, however Matson line has just announced that they will make a downward adjustment to their fuel surcharge effective next month.

Citing lower prices for the bunker fuel that its ships burn, Oakland, Calif.-based Matson said that on Oct. 1 it will cut its surcharge for Hawaii, Guam, Saipan and Micronesia services by 1.5 percentage points, from 21.25 percent to 19.75 percent.

“Matson is pleased to finally make a downward adjustment to our fuel surcharge, after a year of dramatic hikes in fuel prices,” said Dave Hoppes, senior vice president for ocean services. “While fuel costs remain at historic highs, we have seen some relief in the past month.”

Hoppes said the reduction represents a decrease in shipping costs ranging from $30 to $100 per container. Source – Bizjournals.com via Yahoo news

Let’s hope this is a sign of good things to come.
