The berthing of ships in the western port of Kandla was being delayed by around 10 days, while in adjoining Mundra the extra time was about a week.

“There is a lot of congestion and it has slowed down our operation. Heavy rains since last month has caused a slowdown,” said Venkatesh (one name), traffic manager of Kandla Port.

The government has contracted imports of 5.5 million tonnes since March, the first in six years, following a poor harvest. Of that, 1.68 million tonnes have been unloaded at various ports.

The official, who did not want to be identified, added a lack of railway wagons and trucks for transport from ports was also an issue. He said the problem had mainly affected Kandla, Mundra, Tuticorin and Chennai ports.

Poor infrastructure, bad weather, and traffic and port congestion can all contribute to have a severely negative impact on a region or country’s economy and well being. While there doesn’t appear to be any significant impact (at least as not yet) in this particular case, it is a reminder of the potential impact port infrastructure and congestion play in the economy.
