Boeing 747-8 Freighter news
By SwizStick • Nov 2nd, 2006 • Category: Air Cargo, AirlinesApparently Boeing has completed firm configuration of the aircrafts design which will allows Boeing and its suppliers to begin the actual design process for the many parts that make up the aircraft. Hopefully Boeing is learning from Airbus’ many mistakes with their A380F production and can avoid the costly delays that have damaged Airbus’ reputation. From this report it sounds like the Boeing 747-8F will be a winner for cargo operators:
The 747-8 Freighter will be longer than the 747-400F by 5.6 meters and enjoy a maximum structural payload capability of 154 tons with a range of 8,288 kilometres. It also will feature 16 percent more revenue cargo volume than its predecessor. The additional space means the airplane can accommodate four additional main-deck pallets and three additional lower-hold pallets.

“The 747-8 is designed to deliver 14 per cent lower ton-mile costs than the 747-400 Freighter. In fact, the 747-8 Freighter will enjoy the lowest ton-mile costs of any freighter, giving operators unmatched profit potential,” commented Dan Mooney, 747/747-8 program vice president.
Emphasis ours.
