Senai Airport: How to make it a regional hub?
By levying a tax on all cargo that transits via Changi Airport in Singapore instead of local Senai Airport, that’s how!
Senai Airport Terminal Services Sdn Bhd (SATS), in its recommendation to the Transport Ministry, said the levy was imperative if the airport in Johor is to realise its potential as a full-fledged regional air cargo centre.
The leakage of Malaysian cargo through Changi airport is believed to be substantial although no actual figures are readily available.
Many manufacturers and exporters still prefer to ship their cargo by land via the Johor causeway or the 2nd Link for eventual delivery to customers abroad through Changi Airport.
Yes, make things more expensive for the ultimate end-user who ends up paying all of the passed on fees. All those local exporters couldn’t possibly be using Changi Airport because it was – gasp! – more efficient; could they?
Currently, only Malaysia Airlines and budget carrier AirAsia fly into Senai. But SATS wants the rights to negotiate directly with foreign airlines to operate regular scheduled services or special chartered flights into Senai.
Emphasis ours.
No, of course not, the lack of capacity and connections to the world market couldn’t possibly have anything to do with the movement of local cargo through Singapore’s busy airport.
At least they recognize that they need to open up the airport to foreign airlines and increase the number of flights to and from Senai…..yeesh.
