Good news for Boeing - Bad news for Airbus
By SwizStick • Dec 11th, 2006 • Category: Airlines, QuickNewsSingapore Airlines Ltd., Asia’s largest carrier by market value, said it may buy more Boeing Co. 777 airplanes so it can continue to grow if there are further delays with Airbus SAS’s A380 superjumbo jet.“Boeing 777-300ERs in our experience would be a useful alternative to A380s,” Chief Executive Officer Chew Choon Seng said in an interview in Istanbul today. “We could upsize the order if there are further delays with the A380,” he said.
Singapore Airlines began taking delivery of six 777-300ERs last month and expects to have 10 in service by mid-2007. Chew has said the 278-seat planes will mitigate part of the loss in capacity from the lack of A380s. Other carriers, including Emirates and FedEx Corp., have also turned to the 777 model to replace the A380.

The A380 is turning into a financial and PR disaster for Airbus while Boeing continues to reap the rewards. I’ve said before that Boeing better be careful to avoid the same mistakes as Airbus and work extra hard to ensure the 787 Dreamliner is released on schedule, but so far they seem to be doing just fine. Boeing is able to boost their bottom line and production as Airbus customers turn to Boeing aircraft already on the market. This gives Boeing a steady stream of income and orders above and beyond what they probably forecasted, which gives them a financial boost in developing the 787.
