Ports Expecting Growth During “Post-Peak” Season

Even though the peak-season was relatively problem free and ports are currently operating without congestion, the numbers expected for the next few months show that volumes are on the rise:
October is the traditional peak of the annual shipping cycle as retailers rush to bring in merchandise for the holiday shopping season. Volumes in November were forecast for 1.33 million TEUs, 4.6% ahead of the prior-year period. December was expected to see 1.29 million TEUs, a 7% increase of the 2006 period.
Though January 2007 volumes were expected to continue to slow, the estimated 1.24 million TEUs expected would put the month 1.9% ahead of 2006. February’s expected 1.17 million TEUs will be 10.2% ahead of the prior year and March, at 1.27 million TEUs, will not only increase from February but also will come in at 2.1% ahead of 2006.
Don’t be lulled by a false sense of security. A work slowdown, port strike, unexpected spike in volume, or an earlier/heavier than expected peak-season could mean challenging times for 2007.
