Ok, now this just doesn’t make sense
It’s old news from Friday but I just read it today and it seems fitting to write about it following my post from yesterday:
Airbus last week claimed its A380 freighter programme would go ahead, despite reports it was stopping development work and now having no customers for the aircraft.
Via International Freighting Weekly’s Will Waters, who notes in the title to his article “No Customers, but A380F will be built”. What’s interesting is finding out why UPS finally cancelled their order:
UPS had “lost confidence” after being made aware of an Airbus internal memo which indicated it was moving resources from the freighter programme to speed up production of the much-delayed passenger version.
The memo was dated just days after UPS and Airbus had reached a new agreement, allowing UPS time to re-evaluate its needs in light of a revised delivery date of 2012 and the option to cancel.
A source close to UPS told IFW the memo also contained inaccurate information, such as a claim that UPS wanted its order delayed by 10 years.
There are no longer any viable customers for the A380F, with many of its former customers turning to Boeing instead. Why build a product when there are no customers for it and your reputation has more or less been ruined? I guess Airbus felt losing a billion dollars wasn’t enough.
