India to focus on cargo-only airports
By SwizStick • Mar 19th, 2007 • Category: Air Cargo, AirlinesTHE Indian civil aviation ministry is framing a policy for development of cargo-only airports at several key locations throughout the country. The government expects this move to facilitate the booming Indian air cargo industry.
Apart from Nagpur, which is already being developed as a cargo hub, India is evaluating the building of dedicated cargo airports near strategic locations and business centres.
As someone who has flown in and out of several Indian airports, trust me when I say that existing air transport infrastructure is woefully inadequate. India’s major airports are already taxed well beyond capacity for passenger air travel, not to mention cargo. If they can separate cargo from the total equation, particulalry located near major industrial and business centers, it will go a long ways towards improving the air cargo market in India.
