Container traffic at Antwerp passed the 7m teu milestone last year and first-quarter figures show volume growth is still accelerating.

In the first three months of 2007, the port handled 1.95m teu, up 17.4% on the same period last year. In March the figure increased by 24%, boosted by the towage dispute at Rotterdam.

Studies had indicated that container traffic would continue to be the fastest growing sector in the north European Hamburg-Le Havre range, he said.

To accommodate the expected growth, Antwerp has opened the first phase of its Deurganckdok terminal, which has 5.2km of quay.

When fully operational in 2008, the facility will be able to handle 7.5m teu a year, doubling the port’s current container capacity.
