Big hat tip to (former APL homer, current DHL superstar) Eric Joiner for bringing this new service offering from APL to my attention.

Acccording to APL.com, APL will begin offering the general public the option of utilizing 53′ ocean containers on the transpacific trade lane. This new service will offer weekly sailings from South China to Los Angeles.

A couple of benefits I can see include the following:

1. Increased capacity – 60 percent more capacity than a standard 40′ container.
2. Cost savings – with more capacity in the container, it should help drive down landed costs.
3. U.S. distribution – decreased need for transloading and potential reduction in domestic trucking costs.
