India aggressively courting free trade agreements

World Trade Magazine linked last week to a report from the Times of India on a possible free trade agreement between the U.S. and India.

The government on Wednesday said it was contemplating a bilatral trade pact with the US. “Bilateral trade agreements are currently in the pipeline with at least 10 potential partners ranging from Asean, EU, US and Canada,” commerce and industry minister Kamal Nath said at the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas.

India has been on what I can only describe as a whirlwind tour to promote free trade agreements with all of its partners. I have read news reports, mentioned in the quote above, about free trade agreements with ASEAN, the EU, and Indonesia (although I don’t quite know how that differs from the agreement with ASEAN. India is a booming economy and an increasingly important sourcing country for U.S. importers and retailers, so I can only hope that this is good news.
