Nearly 100 ILWU delegates voted during February for a one day work stoppage on May 1, 2008 at the ports in California, Oregon, and Washington. Reasons for the stoppage are to protest the war in Iraq and call for the immediate return of all troops back to the U.S.
Via ILWU.org:
Caucus delegates, including several military veterans, spoke passionately about the importance of supporting the troops by bringing them home safely and ending the War in Iraq. Concerns were also raised about the growing cost of the war that has threatened funding for domestic needs, including education and healthcare.
On a side note, the current contract for the ILWU Longshoreman expires at the end of June. We will be following the issues closely.
