2007 Top Container Lines - Imports and Exports
By SwizStick • Mar 28th, 2008 • Category: QuickNews, SeafreightLast July we posted on the Journal of Commerce’s report on the top 40 Container Lines in terms of TEUs imported into the U.S. for the 1st quarter of 2007 vs 2006. This week the Journal of Commerce issued their annual report on the Top Container Lines for both Imports and Exports covering the entire year of 2007 compared to 2006. Unless you have a subscription you won’t be able to access the report online, but here’s a quick list of the top 5 import carriers to the U.S. and the top 5 export carrier from the U.S.
Imports:
1 - Maersk Line: -17.5%
2 - Evergreen: -3.3%
3 - Hanjin: +2.4%
4 - MSC: -3%
5 - APL: -5.5%
While Maersk Line is still top dog, it’s not too surprising that they suffered double digit declines in volume as they cut intermodal service, shifted vessels to more profitable lanes (Asia-Europe), etc. Out of the other top 5 only Hanjin posted an increase in volume and a modest one at that. The big movers in import volume? CMA-CGM, K-Line, and Matson.
Exports:
1 - Maersk Line: -10.6%
2 - MSC: +43.2%
3 - Hapag Lloyd: +15.2%
4 - Evergreen Line: +34.5%
5 - APL: +23.7%
Interesting that even while exports have boomed thanks to the weak dollar that Maersk still suffered a double digit decline in volume while the remaining top 5 all posted healthy double digit increases in volume, particularly MSC. Other strong increases in export volume? China Shipping (+155%!!!), CMA-CGM, Yang Ming, and OOCL.
If you can, get a copy of this week’s Journal of Commerce for the full report, it’s chock full of interesting info and statistics.
