Fuel / Trucker Strikes: Europe update

By SwizStick • Jun 18th, 2008 • Category: Supply Chain Management

My original post was getting rather long, so I thought I’d start a new one for some of the updates that we know about.

France: The major activity occurred on Monday as truckers implemented a number of “go-slow” actions aimed at slowing and/or disrupting traffic in a number of cities around France. But this appears to have been a one-day event. While it’s possible there may be sporadic instances of striking drivers and there’s certainly plenty of room for future incidents, so far there doesn’t seem to be indications of any further action. The bigger news out of France are union protests over the battle for the 35-hour work week, so fuel strikes have been pushed out of the limelight for the time being.

Germany: There have been scattered reports of “go-slow” actions but nothing substantial. Supposedly an organized “go-slow” action is planned on/about July 5th, but not sure yet if it will materialize.

Italy: We have heard that one of the trucking associations is calling for a strike for late June/early July, but apparently there are ongoing discussions with the government, so perhaps it won’t happen.

Spain: As usual, Spain is still the big problem. Despite last week’s agreement between the government and the major transport unions, which covered the majority of the trucking industry but still left roughly 12% of the industry on strike, the threat of further disruptions and action by drivers is very real. As of Monday the striking drivers were attempting to protest in Madrid but the police supposedly thwarted those efforts.

UK: The tanker driver union reached an agreement with employers so no further disruptions to the petrol industry are expected.

Stumble it!
