California ports’ risk losing dominance in Trans-Pacific trade

A theme we’ve been echoing for quite some time here at 3plwire.com, this month’s issue of World Trade Magazine breaks things down nice and easy in a single article.

The major box ports along the U.S. West Coast have encountered increased competition from seaports along the East Coast in the past few years, but because imports were generally up across the board, there was plenty for everyone. Furthermore, West Coast ports had an edge in transit times from Asia and could accommodate post-Panamax vessels.

But, several key developments are beginning to change the picture.

They cover all the major bases: The development of Prince Rupert, Mexico’s future Port Colonet, expansion of the Panama Canal, and added shipper fees and regulations. Read the whole thing.
