Memphis International Airport is still the world’s busiest busiest cargo airport.

Via Memphis Business Journal:

Around 8.1 billion pounds, or 3.7 million metric tons, passed through Memphis International in 2008. Memphis International serves as FedEx Corp.’s central hub.

Cargo at Memphis International dropped 3.7 percent in 2008, more than 300 million pounds, compared to 2007.

Despite the decline in cargo at MEM, the airport still held onto the top spot just barely edging out Hong Kong International Airport. HKG handled 3.63 million metric tons of cargo. It was widely thought that HKG might overtake MEM with help from rapidly growing international shipments from China; however, shipments from HKG declined in each of the last five months of 2008.
