Ocean freight update

September 8, 2009 by Splatty

It’s been awhile since we last provided an update on the state of ocean freight rates, but with all of the recent activities within the industry, now is a good time. Keep in mind that most of the information below is coming from an NVOCC perspective. If you are a beneifical cargo owner, this information may or may not apply depending upon your individual contract terms.

The last few weeks have been a very busy time for both carriers and forwarders alike. Carriers, facing record drops in volumes, and many facing severe financial difficulties, have recently announced a general rate increase (GRI) for many trade lanes. In my view, the most heavily impacted is the Trans-Pacific Eastbound traffic into the United States from China. Fourteen carriers in the TSA have announced a GRI increase of $400 perTEU and $500 per FEU effective August 10th. Many NVO’s were taking a wait and see approach to determine if they could be successful in either mitigating or completely waiving the GRI. However, with few exceptions, it appears that the GRI is unavoidable. To complicate matters, due to many carriers combining services and reducing capacity, many vessels are running full and we are beginning to see space issues and containers rolling to subsequent vessels.

In addition to the GRI, we are hearing rumblings of many carriers mentioning plans of implementing a peak season surcharge sometime in September/October. Initial indications are that the PSS will be in the $400 to $500 range.

The inbound Asia trade lanes are not the only trade lanes that will be impacted. Many carriers with export service to the South Pacific region have announced plans to implement a GRI. There are also potential GRI’s on the Trans-pacific Westbound trade lanes as well.

Sorry I don’t have better news, but this is the reality of the environment we are in. If you haven’t already, contact your forwarder to determine their position and it also might be wise to communicate your anticipated container volumes and scheduling to help in securing vessel space at origin.
